question and answer
TSH is usually enough
January 2010
Is blood TSH level adequate to detect hypo- or hyperthyroidism, or is T3/T4 needed? ROSHAN DHEDA, MD, Bradford, ON
Yes, TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is the screening test of choice to detect hyper- or hypothyroidism. A T3/T4 may be ordered if TSH is mildly elevated or suppressed, to determine if the patient has subclinical hyper- or hypothyroidism.
