Cold-FX is a derivative of North American ginseng root and has been found to have immunomodulatory effects in vitro. A number of randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials have assessed the efficacy of this agent in reducing the occurrence and duration of respiratory symptoms. These data do indicate a modest but significant reduction in respiratory symptoms when taken as a daily dose.
Unfortunately, the studies that assessed influenza as an outcome were confounded by high rates of concomitant influenza vaccination. No studies have compared a strategy of COLD-FX versus influenza vaccination. So it does appear to reduce the frequency and severity of some respiratory infections, but whether flu is among them, no-one can say.
