Gardasil vs Cervarix: pros and cons
August 2010
Please comment on the new HPV vaccine Cervarix, which only covers HPV type 16 and 18. What are its advantages over Gardasil? K. Chiam-Vimonvat, MD, Orleans, ON
Cervarix is a bivalent vaccine that protects against HPV types 16 and 18, which cause about 70% of all cervical cancers. This vaccine also induces a significant amount of crossprotection against other oncogenic types (31, 33, 45). Gardasil contains 4 antigens: the HPV types 16 and 18 present in Cervarix, plus the HPV types 6 and 11. This affords extra protection against genital warts and respiratory papillomatosis. A number of clinical trials have been conducted to date with these vaccines including one head-to-head comparison trial. My attempt to reduce these results to a very brief summary is as follows: 1) both vaccines are safe and highly effective at protecting women from developing cervical cancer; 2) Gardasil confers significant protection from genital warts; 3) Cervarix induces greater serologic responses to HPV 16 and 18 than Gardasil does, but the clinical significance of this effect remains to be seen over the long term.
