question and answer
Seizures don’t cause lasting deafness
December 2009
Can seizures in the elderly cause sensorineural hearing loss? JULIE CONNOLLY, MD, Sudbury, ON
Although there are a number of syndromes in which seizures and deafness coexist, they most often present early in life. Transient deafness as part of a seizure has been reported. However, I can’t think of a plausible mechanism whereby a seizure disorder would actually cause deafness in an elderly patient.
