Tooth cleaning in pregnancy
December 2008
Are there any contraindications to dental office visits in pregnancy? Formal tooth cleaning, I believe, may cause a transient bacteremia. Is this dangerous? And is there any real concern regarding precipitating preterm labour? Is there a trimester where dental visits should be avoided? JULIE CONNOLLY, MD, Sudbury, ON
Dental care is important during pregnancy including teeth cleaning, dental caries, extractions and dealing with any emergencies. It’s important that patients inform their dentist that they are pregnant, but there are no contraindications to any care.
