Contraception for the clot-prone
August 2009
Is Micronor/Depo-provera an option for contraception in a 36-year-old smoker who had a DVT while on Tri-Cyclen Lo? Her antiphospholipid testing is negative. BRIAN LING, MD, Ajax, ON
Yes. Although she wouldn’t be a candidate for contraceptive options that contain both an estrogen and a progestin (combined oral contraceptive pill, contraceptive patch, and vaginal contraceptive ring), she would be a good candidate for progestin-only methods such as the progestin-only pill (Micronor) or Depo-provera. Progestins haven’t been shown to be associated with an increased risk of VTE. She may also be a good candidate for a copper IUD or Mirena.
