Formula for success
October 2009
What type of water should ideally be used to prepare powdered formulas? Some parents are using bottled water, which I cringe at given the environmental implications. Also, can the use of plain tap water (from a well or other source) result in diarrhea or diaper rash, from certain minerals present in excess? I’d imagine this would be possible. JULIE CONNOLLY, MD, Sudbury, ON
I agree about bottled water, not just for pollution purposes but also because it lacks the standardized rigorous testing that government tap water must go through. Certainly well water that isn’t inspected properly can have bacteria, but I recommend parents use tap water to mix formula. I always remind parents that the concentrate or powder, when mixed appropriately, has the same ingredients as the ready-to-serve!
