Steroids in croup
March 2010
Can you tell me something about the role of oral steroids in the treatment and management of persistent croup? Nargis Haque, MD, Halifax, NS
Oral steroids are effective in decreasing inflammation of the subglottic area during acute croup. I prescribe them as a one-time dose when the child is having stridor at rest. If the kid has recurrent episodes, I’d repeat the dose but if he or she is having persistent symptoms there may be an underlying condition (such as tracheal ring or foreign body) that needs investigation.
