question and answer
anxiety relief with lorazepam
October 2001
"What's the role of lorazepam in the treatment of acute anxiety disorders?" queries STEVE SZARKA, MD, of Hamilton, ON.
Lorazepam can be useful for treating anxiety disorders in several ways. First, sublingual lorazepam may provide quick relief for panic attacks. Second, lorazepam taken t.i.d. may curb anticipatory anxiety, allowing the patient to relax and regain confidence. Because of the dangers of addiction, long-term use of lorazepam isn't advised. It can be useful in the short term, though, while waiting for the anxiolytic effects of an antidepressant to kick in. GR
