Legs apart?

Do we need different knee-replacement models for men and women due to the different angles of their hips and lines of stress on their knees? S.L. Harley, MD, Dartmouth, NS
Recently the concept of gender-specific joint prosthesis has gained some popularity, but in some surgeons’ opinions it’s more of a marketing gimmick than a necessity. It’s best to discuss this with the orthopedic surgeon pre-operatively. Certainly the full spectrum of joint prostheses should be available to choose from, and indeed this is a primary reason why it makes sense to get these procedures undertaken in centres that perform “high volumes.” This specifically has been shown as a marker of improved outcomes and fewer complications.
