Testing testosterone

What screening test is best for testosterone levels? LEN GRBAC, MD, Etobicoke, ON

Testosterone testing may be considered for two conditions: to see if castrate level has been achieved for men undergoing hormone treatment for prostate cancer, and secondly to assess dysfunctional sex drive. For the former, a simple testosterone reading, where normal can range from 10 to 30, is adequate. Castrate level should be under 50 µg/ml.

When testosterone is being checked because of a lack of libido, I always ask for bioavailable testosterone. The normal reading is above 3.5. The blood sample should be taken between 9:00 and 10:30 am, after a normal breakfast.
